Zinedine Zidane continues to break records as Real Madrid manager after watching his side take apart Barcelona in the Real Madrid’s Supercopa triumph on Wednesday.
Madrid won their second trophy in a week, beating Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate for the Supercopa. Since Zidane took over from Rafa Benitez in January of 2016, he has lost 7 games as a manager. And he has now won 7 trophies.
After their latest victory, Zidane paid tribute to his players for their hard work and “spectacular” performance in beating their bitter rivals.
“We had to be prepared for the European Super Cup and since then we’ve picked up two important trophies,” said the Coach after Los Blancos’ 2-0 victory.
“We’ve started the season very well, but we have a lot of it left. It’s going to be very difficult but we’re happy, especially for how we played.
“The first half was spectacular, in terms of intensity, high pressing and possession. In the second, we suffered a bit because our opponents posed us a few problems.
“Asensio? It’s not just him. Everyone’s doing very well and they’re all complying [with my demands] whenever I pick the team.
“Difference with Barca? There won’t be much difference with Barca. [Our rivalry] starts again in La Liga.
“It’s going to be a complicated season, but the important thing is to believe. We played really well and had a great game tonight.
“The first half was spectacular. We applied a lot of intensity from the beginning. It was the game we hoped for.
“We’re happy with how both games went and it’s another trophy for us. I must congratulate the players, they’ve been fantastic.
“A historic team? Everyone here has talent, but it’s not only that… People may think it’s easy, but it’s not. What lies behind it is a lot of work.
“There’s a desire to achieve things. This team are hungry. Every time we play, it shows. Starting like this is good, we’re happy. Now a very long season starts. La Liga isn’t going to be easy, but we’re prepared to accept the challenge.
“There have been many key elements [to our triumph], but the important thing is to believe.
“We believed in what we were doing. We played very well in Barcelona and we also had a great game tonight. We pressed our opponents, we won the ball back high up the pitch…
“The players are working very well. The two trophies are important. We’ve beaten two teams and it’s not easy at all. We’ll try to keep it going.
“We prepare to have a good match, and we prepared to do the same thing we did in the first leg. If it comes out that way, perfect. We can be happy.
“What I want to do is congratulate all the players, but I don’t think there’s going to be any euphoria. We’ll enjoy the moment and we hope to continue like this.
“I’ve always said that I have a spectacular squad. It doesn’t show when we make changes. The players understand what we want to achieve.
“It’s going to be a long season. We’ll have more than 65 games ahead of us, plus internationals, but our changes don’t change the dynamics of the team.
“My players are very good, they have faith in what they do and they know what they want. They’re a group that want to keep winning trophies. I’m here and I’m also enjoying what’s happening.
“I’m happy with Asensio’s goal, I was impressed. I’m not going to change my way of doing things. This is football, everything can change very quickly, but we’ll keep working.
“Last season, we won the League on the last day, with the same team and the same players. We’ll have to work like that again to win [another title].”
