However, Vertonghen finally ended their resistance 15 minutes from time when he finished first time past Gerhard Tremmel after Andros Townsend’s free-kick had only been half-cleared. Spurs then survived a late Swansea onslaught to move into fourth ahead of Everton.
In the late kick-off, West Brom’s stuttering form continued at home to West Ham as they made it three games without scoring. Both sides squandered opportunities to claim all three points with Joey O’Brien steering narrowly over for the visitors before James Morrison’s header thundered back off the crossbar from point-blank range.
In the weekend’s last game, Arsenal travel to Reading on Monday, hoping to close the gap to their North London rivals to two points.
