He is the signing of the summer for Manchester United. Jose Mourinho has signed a four-year deal to finally replace Sir Alex Ferguson at a reported £15m per year.
Mourinho should have been the one to replace Fergie in 2013, but after the mistakes of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, Ed Woodward and the Manchester United board have finally gotten it right.
‘Jose is quite simply the best manager in the game today,’ Woodward said.
‘He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.
‘I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward.’
Mourinho, will will be given at least £200m to spend this summer added:
‘To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game.’
‘It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.
‘I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans.
“I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.’
His first game in charge will be an International Champions Cup friendly in Shanghai against Borussia Dortmund on July 22 before a meeting with old rival Pep Guardiola, now in charge of local rivals Manchester City, three days later in Beijing on July 25.
By winning the FA Cup last weekend, Mourinho’s first competitive match will be at Wembley in the FA Community Shield against Leicester City on 8 August.
