An absolutely brilliant overhead kick from Wayne Rooney gave Manchester United all three points in the Manchester derby and all but eliminated Man City from the title race.
Rooney’s acrobatic effort twelve minutes from time came after City had tied the game up when Dzeko’s shot went in via the back of David Silva. Nani had originally given United the lead before half-time, passing the ball beyond Joe Hart after being released by Ryan Giggs’ first-time pass.
Arsenal, in second, kept pace with United by beating Wolves 2-0 thanks to two goals from Robin van Persie, his tenth and 11th goals this year. Raúl Meireles, meanwhile, scored his fifth in six games for Liverpool, whose run of four successive wins was ended by a 1-1 home draw with Wigan Athletic.
Spurs came from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 as Niko Kranjcar scored Tottenham’s match-winner for the second successive Saturday. The moves Spurs up to fourth in the table and all but ends Sunderland’s dream of European football next season.
In a huge relation six-pointer Dember Ba scored twice in the second half as West Ham United came back from being 3-0 down after 25 minutes to draw 3-3 with West Brom. The point keeps West Brom out of the bottom three on goal difference.
Elsewhere Blackpool and Aston Villa drew 1-1. Birmingham City beat Stoke 1-0 and Blackburn Rovers against Newcastle ended goalless.
