It was a week of records for 2 of the best players in the world. Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi achieved significant personal milestones in their careers as they scored their 100th and 200th goals in midweek Champions League action.
I have to admit, although i am not Cristiano Ronaldo fan, his accomplishment in two seasons with Madrid is simply amazing. 100 goals in 2 seasons over 40 of which he scored in the league alone last year. Even Messi’s amazing record can’t compete with that.
However, his first goal on the night yesterday, was the best. A free kick that had Hugo Lloris far beaten attested to the skill Ronaldo has perfected over the year. This brings Ronaldo’s official tally to 100 goals in 105 appearances for Madrid.
Contrary to what many people think that Messi will walk away with the FIFA Bllon D’or award without any competition, the tables might just have turned after last night’s performance from Ronaldo.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo admitted that he did not expect to score his 100th goal so soon.
“I didn’t expect to score my 100th goal so soon,” Ronaldo said. “I’d like to thank my team-mates and the manager [Jose Mourinho], who gives me the chance to play and grow as a player and as a person.”
Madrid made it 4 wins out of 4 and although they have already qualified, wins in the last 2 matches against Ajax and Dinamo Zagreb would see them pick up maximum points in the Group stages.
“It was important to win and qualify for the next round,” Ronaldo continued. “We made it. We’re calmer now that we’ve won our first four games. We all played very well against a team that made things difficult for us. We must keep this up and avoid comparing ourselves with other sides.”
This could prove to be the biggest season in recent Spanish La Liga history as two of the best teams and players look to stamp their teams and individual supremacy on the game.
