Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick in a 4-0 win against Getafe as Real Madrid ensured FC Barcelona were not crowned Liga champions without kicking a ball.
The Portugal forward, who scored four times in a 6-2 triumph at Sevilla on Saturday, rounded off another convincing victory for the Merengues with an added-time penalty, his 36th league goal this season. Karim Benzema was also on target for José Mourinho’s men.
Failure for Madrid to defeat their neighbours would have sewn up the title for Barcelona, who will nonetheless retain the championship with a point against Levante on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, RC Deportivo La Coruña came from behind to defeat Athletic Club 2-1 and ease their relegation concerns, while Málaga CF leapfrogged opponents Real Sporting de Gijón into tenth with a 2-0 home win. Real Racing Club dented Club Atlético de Madrid’s UEFA Europa League hopes with a 2-1 victory at El Sardinero.
