The LA Galaxy announced on Wednesday that they have signed Robbie Keane to a new multi-year contract extension.
The Galaxy MVP in 2012, Keane has been a terrific signing by the Galaxy. He has 16 goals in 28 regular season games with LA while adding nine assists. But more important, Keane has been the difference in the playoffs.
In the 2011 MLS Cup, Keane assisted on Landon Donovan’s winner in the 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo. Then in the 2012 postseason, Keane led MLS with six goals, including one in the final against Houston, as the Galaxy won their second consecutive MLS Cup championship.
I have long held the belief that the difference between MLS and the top leagues in Europe is the quality of the strikers. The best teams in Europe have strikers who if they get two opportunities a game, will put one of them away. Keane does that for LA. It is no coincidence that the the Galaxy, with Beckham and Donovan, started to win MLS Cup’s after Robbie Keane arrived.
