The two best teams in MLS met Wednesday in the latest installment of the Rocky Mountain Cup. This game matched up the past two MLS Cup champions and like four of the previous six games between these two rivals, was decided by a goal scored after the 88th minute.
In the third minute of second half stoppage time, a foul gave RSL a free-kick 25 yards out. Javier Morales took the free-kick and saw his shot rebound back off the post to Paulo Jr. who was unable to control it. But he was able to nudge it forward to Fabian Espindola who was able to put the ball away for the game winner.
Nick Rimando earned his 76th shutout, tying Zach Thornton for second on the MLS list.
Real Salt Lake has now won 18 consecutive regular-season games, moving within one of matching the MLS record. It faces Portland on April 30 and hosts Chivas USA on May 7. With the win RSL also extended its home unbeaten streak against MLS opponents to 27 games.
