Cristiano Ronaldo will be invited back to Real Madrid next year so they can pay tribute to one of their all-time greats.
The Portuguese star left Madrid for Juventus in a £100million switch earlier on in the summer after nine trophy-laden years in the Spanish capital.
Ronaldo’s long-time love affair with the club had threatened to turn sour when relations with president Florentino Perez turned frosty in the summer after he made his intentions clear on leaving.
But now that the dust has settled, Perez and Madrid have decided to plan Ronaldo’s ceremonial return to honour his years of service.
Ronaldo will receive an invitation back to Madrid for the 2019 edition of the Bernabeu Trophy with Juventus.
The pre-season friendly has traditionally been used to celebrate the return of a former player with club legend Raul gracing the Bernabeu pitch again with Al-Sadd in 2013.
ker Casillas was also the subject of such an offer in both 2017 and 2018, but Porto have been unable to fit the fixture in due to their hectic pre-season schedule.
The club are also planning to make several tributes to other former stars ahead of the 2019 Bernabeu Trophy and have placed it at the top of their agenda.
This year’s installment will be played against AC Milan on August 11.
