Real Madrid have completed their fourth signing of the summer after securing the services of highly-rated Lens defender Raphael Varane on a six-year contract. Reports put the transfer fee at about 10 million euros
“Real Madrid and Lens have reached an agreement for the transfer of the French player Raphael Varane, who will be tied to the club for the next six seasons,” Real announced on their official website.
Varane, 18, emerged as one of the hottest prospects in European football last season, with his assured displays seeing him stand out in a campaign that saw his club relegated from Ligue 1.
A quote on the Real Madrid web site described the player this way:
His impressive height (191 cm) allows him to dominate the aerial game; his versatility makes him a solid defender or central midfielder; his elegance made him see only two bookings in the entire season; and his speed, sense of anticipation, dribbling skills and maturity turned him into one of the most important players at Lens, getting to wear the captain’s armband in the match before last against Arles-Avignon.
