For all his posturing about how much he wanted to join Manchester United, at the end of the day all Sergio Ramos apparently wanted was more money from Real Madrid. And by all accounts he will get it.
According to MARCA, Madrid president Florentino Pérez and club director José Ángel Sánchez met with Ramos and his agent, brother René, in China on Sunday.
The four of them sung Kumbaya after Perez apologized for the all the leaked information and rumours that had come from the club regarding the player and his brother. Pérez reportedly also told his captain that the Spanish giants will not sell him this summer, even if he hands in a transfer request.
After the disastrous way that the departure of Iker Casillas was handled, there was no way that Perez could take the PR hit by also letting another captain leave to. During Casillas’s send off at the Bernabéu, supporters chanted “Ramos is not for sale” and called for the president to resign.
So while Ramos will get a nice new contract extension with a sizable pay increase in a couple of weeks, where does that leave Manchester United?
By all accounts United are content to let David de Gea run down his contract at leave for free in 12 months. De Gea is one of the top three goalkeepers in the world and United feel that they have a better chance of winning a trophy with de Gea in the side, versus him being in Madrid.
United still need a top center half now that Ramos is off the market. United have been linked with Everton starlet John Stones in recent days while Valencia center half Nicolas Otamendi has been dying to make a move to United for months.
With the start of the Premier League season less than two weeks away the clock is ticking on Ed Woodward in brining in a central defender. Who would up like to see United sign?
