Former Inter Milan boss Rafa Benitez is expected to return to management in Spain by taking over at Atletico Madrid this summer.
Current Atletico boss Quique Sanchez Flores is out of contract at the end of the season and has not been offered a new deal by the La Liga side leaving the door open for Benitez to make his return to management, according to Spanish paper AS.
One of the first tasks Benitez will be faced with will be trying to keep 20-year-old goalkeeper David de Gea at the club with Manchester United and Chelsea showing a keen interest in the youngster.
The prospect of Benitez sharing the same city with Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho, who he strongly dislikes, will add some added spice to the Madrid derby’s next season.
Atletico are currently sixth in La Liga, 39 points behind leaders Barcelona.
