Racing Santander’s new Indian owners have not wasted much time making changes as coach Miguel Angel Portugal has been sacked.
“Real Racing Club have reached an agreement with Miguel Angel Portugal on the cancellation of his contract,” Racing said in a statement on their website.
This season under Portugal, who was appointed to replace Juan Carlos Mandia in November 2009, Racing Santander are 16th in La Liga, one point above the relegation places. According to the Spanish media, Marcelino Garcia is expected to be return to Racing as their new manager.
Under Garcia’s leadership, Racing achieved its highest finish for more than 60 years when it finished sixth in La Liga and earned qualification for the UEFA Cup.
Racing’s new owner Ali Syed is the founder and chairman of investment company Western Gulf Advisory, and he has said he wants to make Racing into a a recognised name internationally.
