Paris Saint-Germain’s wealthy Qatari owners have admitted they would be interested in signing Wayne Rooney.
Rooney’s future at Manchester United was plunged into doubt last month when he was left on the
bench for their pivotal Champions League clash at home to Real Madrid.
Although Sir Alex Ferguson insists the England striker will be offered a new contract, newspaper reports suggets that United would consider bids in excess of £20million this summer.
PSG owners Qatar Investment Authority would have little problem meeting that kind of figure, having already spent more than £200m to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Lucas Moura and David Beckham.
Asked earlier this week about the possibility of signing Rooney, the French club’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said:
‘He is a great player, he is one of the best strikers in the world. I think everyone would like to have him but if you want to talk about the fact, we didn’t approach him.’
These rumours will not go away despite the denials from Sir Alex Ferguson. It might purely be gossip, but Italian newspapers continue to say that Zlatan Ibrahimović will be heading back to Serie A and Juventus this summer. That will leave PSG in need of a top striker, and Wayne Rooney will not only help PSG on the pitch, but he is the best English player in the Premier League and will allow PSG to increase their English speaking fan base worldwide.
And who will United replace Rooney with? The Spanish papers still believe that Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Real Madrid this summer, and that GM and Nike are both willing to help pave the way for his return to Old Trafford!!
As I said this could all be transfer gossip and nothing happens. But if Ibra leaves PSG this summer, the dominoes will start to fall across Europe and result could be Rooney and Ronaldo playing for different clubs next season.
