The draw is 17 December, but with all the group games complete, we do know the potential opponents for the La Liga teams left in the competition.
Group Winners
Barcelona
These are Barca’s possible opponents: Inter, Lyon, Roma, Marseille, Milan, Arsenal. The odds are 50-50 that Barca will play one of the three Italian teams left in the competition in the knockout stages which sets up the prospect of Barca playing Inter again and getting revenge for last season’s defeat in the tournament.
Real Madrid
Real Madrid will play one of the second seeds. These are Madrid’s possible opponents: Inter, Lyon, FC Copenhagen, Roma, Marseille, Arsenal. Obviously FC Copenhagen is the weakest of the possible opponents, while the most intriguing tie is Real Madrid v Inter, which would see Jose Mourinho return to face his former team.
Valencia CF
Valencia will play one of the top seeds, These are Valencia’s possible opponents: Tottenham, Schalke, Bayern, Chelsea, Shakhtar. Valenica will probably hope to avoid Bayern and Chelsea, but will like their chances against the other three possible opponents.
The first leg which will be played between 15-23 February and the return leg will be played between the 8-16 March.
