Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Anthony Martial can be a 20-goal striker for Manchester United after the Frenchman salvaged a Europa League draw in Bruges.
Martial’s equaliser makes United favourites to reach the last 16 of the competition when they meet Club Brugge again at Old Trafford next week.
It also took him to 14 goals for the season following his header against Chelsea in United’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
Marcus Rashford has 19 so far this season but Solskjaer thinks Martial can go one further after moving in from the left wing to replace his injured teammate.
‘Definitely,’ said the United manager. ‘I think Anthony can step up, get a few more and get to the 20 mark.
‘He’s got quality of course, he’s a very good finisher. He takes his chances really well. There’s good technique in his finishing.
‘He’s good receiving the ball at times and dropping off. He can play almost like a false nine as well. Sometimes I’d like him to be stronger physically.’
Solskjaer was impressed by Martial’s aggression in heading United in front against Chelsea. ‘
A 1980s centre-forward goal,’ he added.
‘I’m encouraged by his attitude this season as well, wanting to do those things that are not natural for him.
‘You’ve got to make him a No 9 again after playing wide for so many years. Marcus and Anthony have played wide for a few years until the last 12 months really.’
