AC Milan have appointed Sinisa Mihajlovic as their new manager only hours after sacking Filippo Inzaghi. Mihajlovic, who stepped down as Sampdoria coach earlier this month after almost two years in charge, has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the Rossoneri.
A statement from AC Milan read:
“Sinisa Mihajlovic, who has signed a two-year contract with the club, will be the new AC Milan coach for next season. The club wishes Mihajlovic the best results.”
The Rossoneri, under first-year coach Inzaghi, finished tenth in Serie A this season and will miss out again on European football after finishing eighth the previous year.
Earlier on Tuesday, Milan released a separate statement announcing that Inzaghi, who was under contract for another season, had left the club.
It said:
“AC Milan announces it has dismissed first team coach Filippo Inzaghi and thanks him for the work done.”
There has been a revolving door at the San Siro for managers in recent times. Milan began the 2013/14 season with Massimiliano Allegri in charge but they fired him and put former player Clarence Seedorf in command of the team.
After finishing eight Seedorf was fired with the club installing Inzaghi. But the Rossoneri struggled last season under Inzaghi, winning just 13 of their 38 league games.
The challenge for Mihajlovic is the lack of quality in the Milan squad. Since the club decided to sell striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Thiago Silva to Paris St Germain in 2012, the Rossoneri have been on a downward spiral towards mediocrity.
