This has been a transfer window that has both excited and infuriated Manchester United supporters.
United fans were excited early on as the deals for Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger were all done early enough for the new signings to join the club on their USA preseason tour.
But since then Ed Woodward has been unable to complete a deal. He was played by Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid and that infatuation with the Madrid skipper cost them Valencia centre back Nicolas Otamendi. With the Pedro signing in danger of being hijacked by Manchester City and Chelsea, United need to make a splash in the transfer market like they did last year with the signings of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao in August.
Woodward and van Gaal have decided that the Galáctico they want is Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller, and according to Sport Bild United have made a £60m bid (€85m) for the German striker. f
Louis van Gaal has insisted signing a striker before the transfer deadline is not ‘a priority’ despite being left with just Wayne Rooney, James Wilson and Javier Hernandez as his three recognized strikers.
There were reports over the weekend Muller has told friends he would welcome a move to Old Trafford.
But speaking after the sale of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinze Rummenigge insisted Muller wouldn’t be following his international team-mate.
He said: “I can calm all the worries of all Bayern supporters. We will not let another player leave for Manchester United.”
This seems like me to be a lost cause for United. I cannot see Bayern selling Muller and the only thing I can see coming out of this is that Muller is able to use United’s interest in getting a new contract.
