Sir Alex started seven men who took home the UEFA Champions League trophy last May but still came up short against the determined Russian side in Super Cup action this weekend. Zenit also played seven from last May’s starting XI that dispatched Rangers 2-0 in the UEFA Cup.
Zenit St. Petersburg did have the advantage of being in better shape. The club is now past the half-way mark in this year’s Russian Premier League. Another key to the match was Zenit’s recent signing of Portuguese midfielder Danny who scored the club’s second goal. Danny made English international Rio Ferdinand look rather silly during the build up to the score.
Sir Alex will have to wait to add a third Super Cup to his list.
