According to the Italian newspaper Tuttosport, Manchester United have made a record breaking £56 million bid for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.
The 27-year-old Uruguay striker only joined PSG last summer from Napoli for around £55m, but he is believed to be unhappy at playing second fiddle to superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
United’s interest in Cavani is not new, as the rumors have been around since early in the year that David Moyes want to sign the striker. Cavanni was said to be very interested in moving to Old Trafford, but that interested is said to have wained after United failed to qualify for the Champions League next summer. But maybe some extra pounds in his paycheck have helped change his mind?
While Cavani scored 25 goals in 43 games for PSG in all competitions last season he always underwhelmed me. When you look at the top strikers in Europe; Ronaldo, Messi, Costa, Falcao, Suarez, Ibrahimovic, Cavani does not belong in that group.
Think back to the Chelsea Champions League quarterfinal when Cavani missed a great opportunity to give PSG the win, but missed the target. Do you think any of those other strikers would have missed that chance?
Fifty six million pounds is a huge amount of money to pay for someone who is not truly world class, and that is without trying to figure out how Cavani fits into the United team. Would Louis van Gaal go with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Rooney, Mata and van Persie playing behind Cavani?
What do you think of Edinson Cavani? Is he worth that kind of money?
