Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is hopeful that he can tie up a deal for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero this week.
Aguero missed training with Atletico after failing to return from the Copa America and has made it clear that he wants to move on this summer. Now Mancini, who has admitted his interest in the Argentine, says more news is expected soon.
“I don’t know at the moment. The last news that I heard about Aguero was that the club was talking with Atletico Madrid [before the weekend],” Mancini said. “I think that maybe in four or five days, before the next game, I think that in this week maybe we can close. Maybe. Aguero played in Copa America. If we close the deal, I need to speak with him, because I want to know his opinion [of playing in Manchester].”
Aguero would be an able replacement for the wantaway Carlos Tevez, but Mancini said he expects his striker to return to face Manchester United in the Community Shield on August 7 if no agreement has been reached by then.
“When he comes back and his condition is good, maybe he can have a chance,” said Mancini. “He has played in Copa America. And two weeks they [players] can’t lose their condition. After one week, if they work only one week, he can find his condition.”
