It is pretty amazing that for a team in 3rd place in Serie A, the only Italian team left in the Champions League and still in the Italian Cup, that there has been so much negative stuff written about Inter this week. That is what happens when you lose two big games back to back.
But this is a big summer for Inter as the squad needs to be updated and then there is the question about who will lead the Nerazzurri next season. Here are some of the decisions that need to be made.
Coach
The first question that President Moratti needs to answer is whether Leonardo the right man to build and lead this team? His record in home matches in the Champions League (4 defeats and 2 draws) would suggest not. But if he thinks that Leonardo can learn from his mistakes then I expect to see him back next season. Otherwise the dream candidate is Guardiola, but the more likely option is Mourinho’s pupil Villas Boas, a Portuguese champion with Porto.
Players
Regardless of the coach, the Inter squad needs refreshing. Quality is needed in the midfield, as is a new full-back and probably a playmaker.
Inter will keep certain untouchables like Eto’o, Lucio and of course the captain Zanetti. Ranocchia and Pazzini are key pieces projected for the future.
Milito, Chivu, Pandev and Motta have all either had injury plagued season’s or appear to be on the downside part of their careers. It would not surprise me to see at least two from this group get sold this summer.
To bring in quality players, Inter needs to sell players to raise cash. The most profitable names are Maicon, Sneijder (who appeals to Manchester United) and Julio Cesar (with Viviano ready to substitute him). Combined all three should bring in 75 million euros. That is a lot of money that could be invested in four or five new players.
What do you think Inter will do this summer? Will Leonardo be back? Who would you sell?
