As for the match, Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by 10-man Sevilla, in a physical encounter. Divock Origi’s goal, which cancelled out a strike from former Manchester City winger Nolito, was a rare shot on target. In the end, they lost out to a last minute strike from Alejandro Pozo.
While Jurgen Klopp has been eager to stress that this tour has provided a chance for some of the club’s younger players to get much-needed experience, he has to be a little worried about lack of depth.
There were 24 men involved against Sevilla but, in reality, only 14 will be called on when the real business begins. Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker are currently on holiday, while Xherdhan Shaqiri, Adam Lallana and Naby Keita are injured.
That takes the number to 21, and that will not be enough to get through a season in which they could play more than 60 games if they are successful.
The glaring hole is up-front where Champions League Final hero Divock Origi is too big of a drop in quality from Firmino, Mane and Salah. Liverpool need another top striker as all three strikers have been involved in summer tournaments, which means a shortened break and an increased likelihood of injury this season.
Klopp has played the transfer market supremely well since he has been at Anfield. You wonder if he has something up his sleeve before August 8.
