Liverpool have rejected Fernando Torres’ written transfer request as his potential transfer to Chelsea took another turn today.
Yesterday Liverpool announced that they has turned down a £40million bid from Chelsea for Torres, but the Anfield faithful have to be reeling after hearing that Torres handed in a written transfer request today.
“Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool,” a club statement said. “Fernando is under long-term contract, and the club expect him to honor the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”
That Torres made the transfer request is a huge blow for Kenny Dalglish, who recently returned as Liverpool manager.
Reports are that Chelsea came back to Liverpool today with a new offer of £42.5m plus Daniel Sturridge which Liverpool rejected. There are some reports that say if Chelsea offer £50m cash for Torres that Liverpool owners might be willing to sell.
Liverpool’s new U.S. ownership is in a tough position. They don’t want to appear to the Liverpool fans that they are lacking in ambition but this is a Liverpool team that needs four or five new players and £50m will go a long way towards making Liverpool more competitive.
Liverpool have already agreed to sign Luis Suarez from Ajax for £23m and they have been chasing Blackpool’s Charlie Adam all month.
To add more spice to this Torres to Chelsea deal, his first game for Chelsea could be at Stamford Bridge on February against Liverpool!!
