With the transfer window closing in less than 24 hours there was a lot of activity on Sunday. Manchester City finally got their goalkeeper as they signed Shay Given from Newcastle. As soon as I heard that Kevin Nolan has joined Newcastle United for £4m the other day, you knew that the Givens deal was almost done. There was no way Mike Ashley was buying a player unless he was sure he was getting money in.
Another Newcastle player leaving is Charles N’Zogbia he looks like is heading to Wigan after their manager Steve Bruce revealed that the two clubs had agreed a fee.
As Shay Given came in Tal Ben Haim went out at Eastlands. Ben Haim heading to Sunderland on a loan deal. Speaking of loan deals it seems that Fulham are hoping to re-sign former striker Brian McBride on loan from MLS side Chicago Fire
Portsmouth finally got some help as they signed Bayer Leverkusen striker Theofanis Gekas on loan until the end of the season. The loan deal includes an option for Portsmouth to sign the 28-year-old Greek international permanently. Hopefully Gekas can replace the goals that Pompey lost when Defoe went to Spurs.
It looks like Bolton will spend some of those Kevin Nolan funds on Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis for around £2 million.
Speaking of Spurs, they are rumored to be looking to bring back Robbie Keane to White Hart Lane. This is a deal that makes sense financial as Liverpool probably put 20% down for Keane in the summer or around £4 million. If Spurs take him back for £16 million then both teams can wipe out the original transfer. That is what happened between Spurs and Portsmouth with the Defoe deal.
The other big transfer story has been Arsenal’s long pursuit of Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg. It looks like this deal will finally go through tomorrow.
