Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi Hernández have been nominated for UEFA’s award for the best player of the 2010/11 season. The award will be presented on August 25 in Monaco before the draw for the Champions League group stages.
According to UEFA:
“the award aims to recognise the best player, irrespective of his nationality, who has played for a football club within the territory of a UEFA member national association during the season to which the award relates. Players will be judged for their performance during the 2010/11 season in all competitions, both domestically and internationally, at either club or national team level.”
Any doubts that it will be Messi who will be named the winner next month? Yes Ronaldo scored 53 goals and won the the Golden Boot award last season, but Messi led Barcelona to a La Liga and Champions League double. And that usually trumps a goalscoring record.
