The LA Galaxy have given David Beckham permission to stay and train with Tottenham Hotspur for another two weeks. At first glance, this is a strange decision by the Galaxy who are back in training themselves, as they get ready for another MLS season.
So why let Becks stay in London instead of join his LA teammates? Well one reason is a “strategic alliance” between the two clubs that could see more exchanges of players in the future.
Spurs have partnered with Galaxy owners, the AEG group in a joint bid to take over the London’s Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games.
If the group get the stadium, Tim Leiweke, president of the AEG group that owns the Galaxy, says the trans-Atlantic partnership will grow stronger.
Leiweke says the group is trying to “think outside the box on football.” That includes Beckham’s training and “maybe players from Tottenham coming to the Galaxy (or) playing games against each other.”
Wonder what Bruce Arena thinks of this “strategic alliance” as he tries to get his team ready to compete in MLS this season?
