Remember back in 2008-09 when Robbie Keane made a bad decision to join his boyhood team Liverpool? The move never worked out for a variety of reasons and I wonder of if the LA Galaxy captain has any lingering resentment towards Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard about his time on Merseyside?
Keane is the now the captain of the LA Galaxy and he made it crystal clear in an interview this week that he does not expect to hand over the captaincy of LA Galaxy to Steven Gerrard when the former England captain makes his high-profile move to California at the start of July.
“He is arriving as an addition, not as a replacement as captain,” Keane told reporters in the Irish capital Dublin, where he led the LA Galaxy squad on a hospital visit to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital and to an audience with Irish President Michael D. Higgins.
“I have spoken to Steven and he is excited about the challenge of coming to LA Galaxy. He is going to be a great addition to our squad.”
With the retirement of Landon Donovan at the end of last season, Keane is now the face of Major League Soccer’s biggest franchise. It will be interesting to see if that changes when the Gerrard arrives, who is arguably MLS’s biggest signing since David Beckham landed in LA.
