Soccer fans were stunned when Tim Leiweke stunningly left his post as the president of LA Galaxy owner AEGa couple of weeks ago. Leiweke was responsible for increasing the worldwide visibility of the Galaxy by signing the likes of David Beckham and Robbie Keane.
On Friday, Leiweke was named the new CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns Toronto FC and several other Toronto pro sports teams.
TFC has the potential to be the best franchise in MLS. They have a great stadium, facilities and a passionate fan base. All that has been missing has been success on the pitch. Despite winning four Canadian Championships, TFC has yet to reach the MLS playoffs, despite being in the league six years.
Leiweke is known for signing big-name stars and Grant Wahl of SI asked him on Friday that he Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment are 100% behind him in his efforts to land a big-name star on the order of Beckham or Keane for Toronto, though it may not happen in this summer’s transfer window.
