Has another player ever followed the heights of winning the World Cup in a summer with as disappointing season as Lukas Podolski has had.
Unwanted in Milan, Podolski has confirmed he intends to return to Arsenal in the summer to fight for his first team spot, after a rather miserable spell on loan at Inter Milan.
Podolski burnt a few bridges on his way out of the Emirates in January, but the 290year-old has been a flop in Italy, and will now have to return to Arsene Wenger cap in hand.
The signing of Podolski in January was met with enthusiasm by Inter fans, but those feelings changed when Inter fans saw the German international play. Podolski has failed to score a single goal in 11 Serie A appearances, while he has completed 90 minutes for Roberto Mancini’s side just twice in the league.
‘When I go back (to Arsenal) I think I have the chance to play there” said Podolski.
‘I have one year left so well will see what happens. I feel very well at the club and with my teammates as well. I had a great two and a half years; I scored a lot of goals there and had a lot of assists.
‘The first six months of the season were not easy, that’s why I changed clubs. But now I’m ready.’
I cannot see Arsene Wenger taking Podolski back. He is an expensive back-up, and if he cannot get into the Inter line-up, he is certainly not getting into the Arsenal one. With one year left on his contract I expect the Gunners to sell Podolski this summer, potentially to a German side.
What do you think of Podolski returning to Arsenal this summer? Should the Gunners keep him or sell him?
