Inter Milan have announced that coach Luciano Spalletti has been fired, paving the way for the arrival of Antonio Conte.
The announcement comes as no surprise, despite Spalletti mourning the loss of his brother only two days ago, given Conte has agreed a three-year contract with Inter.
“FC Internazionale Milano can confirm that Luciano Spalletti is no longer Head Coach of the First Team,” the club tweeted.
“The Club wishes to thank Spalletti for his work and the results achieved together.”
The 60-year-old moved to San Siro from Roma in the summer of 2017 and led the Nerazzurri to successive Champions League qualifications – their first in seven years.
However, he has paid the price for failing to mount a Scudetto challenge or win any silverware in his two seasons.
Inter President Steven Zhang says he will ‘never forget’ Luciano Spalletti’s reign, saying that he will ‘always be my Coach’ after getting Inter back into the Champions League.
