Iker Casillas Wants To Join Arsenal

iker-copaAccording to Spain’s El Confidencial, Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas wants the European Champions to tear up his contract so he can join Arsenal on a free transfer.

The Real Madrid legend lost his No 1 spot to Diego Lopez two seasons ago and now only starts for Real in the Champions League. With the signing of Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas, Casillas is looking at another season on the bench, something he is not prepared to do.

Arsenal have been linked with Casillas in the past, are they are in need of someone to challenge incumbent Wojciech Szczesny. Arsenal are reported to have already agreed a deal for a goalkeeper, £3.2 million for Nice’s Colombian David Ospina, but Casillas is a big step up from Ospina.

Casillas endured a miserable Champions League Final and World Cup as his lack of playing time finally caught up with him. The big question surrounding Casillas is whether he can retain the form that made him one of the best goalkeepers in the world?

As for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger, you would not bring in someone of the stature of Casillas to sit on the bench at the Emirates. So signing Casillas means that Szczesny will spend the next couple of years on the bench. How will be take that?

This possible transfer has be split on whether it would be a good move or not for Arsenal. Adding someone with the stature and winning experience of Casillas to the Arsenal dressing room can only be positive. But after watching him play in the Champions League final I would have to question whether his signing actually makes Arsenal a better side.

What do you think? Would Iker Casillas be a good signing for Arsenal?
