Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola insists he would rather win the Primera Liga title than the Champions League.
The Catalan giants remain on course to claim both crowns this term, sitting well placed in the league and safely through to the last eight in Europe.
Barca took both trophies last season, as part of an historic Treble, and are keen to ensure that both remain at Camp Nou.
However, with Real Madrid currently leading the way in the league, Guardiola admits seeing off the challenge of Barca’s arch-rivals remains his top priority this year.
“The main target this season is not to win the Champions League, but to retain the Liga title,” he said. “I never discount anything but it is clear that if we do not do well in domestic competition, we will not achieve much in Europe. The Liga is our main objective because I have demanded the maximum from my players in every match. If we are not able to maintain these levels throughout the season things will get complicated.”
Sorry Pep, but I don’t buy it. Yes winning the league is important, but I have no doubt that you would like nothing better than to hold aloft the Champions League trophy in the Bernabeu
