Napoli moved back within two points of Serie A leaders Juventus after beating Pescara 5-1 on Sunday, while Inter and Lazio also picked up important wins.
On Saturday, Juventus rebounded from last week’s defeat to AC Milan beat ten-man Torino 3-0 in the first Derby della Mole since March 2009, Claudio Marchisio scoring twice for Juve.
That win put pressure on Napoli to respond in kind and they did in style as Edinson Cavani and Gökhan Inler both scored twice as Napoli won in style.
The match was was just nine minutes old when Inler set the tone with a rasping long-range strike. A beautifully crafted move culminated in an unerring Marek Hamšík finish six minutes later, before Birkir Bjarnason reduced the deficit.
Napoli wrested back the initiative after the break when Cavani converted from the spot, and he subsequently doubled his tally with a sumptuous finish. Not content with their lot, Inler’s spectacular second made it five.
Inter lie third after Santiago García’s own goal handed them a 1-0 home win against Palermo, as Fiorentina unable to jump ahead of the Nerazzurri due their 2-2 home draw with Sampdoria.
In fifth, Lazio edged Parma 2-1, and their sixth-placed city neighbours AS Roma ran out 3-1 winners at Siena, with Mattia Destro scoring twice.
Elsewhere, Udinese finally won after a winless run of five games as they beat Cagliari 4-1, Chievo Verona won 4-2 at struggling Genoa and Bologna climbed up to 16th after beating Atalanta 2-1.
