Former Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini says it was made clear to him that Wesley Sneijder was to be sold in the summer.
Sneijder was linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer, with the Premier League champions thought to have been close to agreeing a £35m fee with Inter.
Gasperini told Controcampo:
“Some decisions had already been made for a long time, then the market moved differently. I consider Wesley a fantastic player, I had a great relationship with him, when he played he always gave so much. It was known, however, that the intention was to sell Sneijder if there was an important offer. In any case, regardless, the team was competitive, in my opinion it is the same today, but it is clear that the situation is a bit sensitive but the values are there.”
Not surprised. I have thought that Inter wanted to sell Sneijder in order to generate funds to buy new players. Then came the crazy offer for Eto’o and Inter did not need to sell Sneijder anymore.
Gasperini also complained that he didn’t receive the kind of backing he expected in the summer transfer window.
“It didn’t go as I expected, there were some difficulties and I didn’t expect (Samuel) Eto’o to leave,” he said. “I was expecting a forward line made up of the Cameroonian, (Giampaolo) Pazzini and (Rodrigo) Palacio, I wasn’t interested in (Alexis) Sanchez, (Carlos) Tevez or (Ezequiel) Lavezzi.”
One person missing from that line-up is Diego Milito who has never regained the form the showed before the World Cup Finals in 2010 when he led Inter to the treble.
