It was always going to be an interesting game. David Beckham’s first game of the season against the team he played for this winter. Would the Galaxy fans embrace Beckham or would they be upset at how he treated them and MLS this winter?
From the banners around the sold-out Home Depot Center it was pretty apparent before kick-off how the Galaxy fans felt. When Beckham’s name was announced there were more boos than cheers.
And LA’s Riot Squad continued to boo Beckham ever time he touched the ball and held aloft signs reading ‘Go Home Fraud’ and ’23: Repent’ in reference to his shirt number.
At one point a furious Beckham tried to leap over an advertising boarding last night to confront his own team’s jeering fans. An angry Beckham appeared to make a “come on” gesture to the baying soccer mob before allegedly swearing at a fan.
As for the game between the Galaxy and AC Milan it ended up a 2-2 draw, with Beckham having a hand in both Galaxy goals.
For the first he played a trademark cross-field ball to Donovan, who then set up Alan Gordon, while for the second, and with Galaxy 2-1 down, it was Beckham’s corner that was headed home by Bryan Jordan.
“There’s not another player on this team or in this league who can make those kinds of plays,” stated Donovan. “That’s going to be crucial for us.”
It will be interesting to see how Beckham responds to the jeering. Will he sulk like he did last season after Ruud Gillet was will he be fired up to show the fans that they are wrong about him. Galaxy fans hope it is the latter.
