Ever since he was spotted alongside David Beckham at an LA Galaxy match a few weeks ago at The Home Depot Center, rumors have swirled that Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard was heading to Major League Soccer.
After the match against PSG in New York last night, Lampard was asked whether the rumors of a move to Los Angeles were true. Lamps did not exactly deny that he was interested in finishing his career in the U.S.
“I’m not sure,” Lampard told media after the 1-1 draw vs. Paris Saint-Germain. “I have another year on my contract at Chelsea. We have a big season. We play in the Super Cup and the World Club Championship in December. Then it’s up to Chelsea. If they want to speak with me about my future, then I’ll speak with them. I wouldn’t rule anything out at the moment.”
The question came once again. Are you coming to MLS?
“Not at the moment, no,” Lampard reaffirmed, “because I have a contract with Chelsea. Beyond that I don’t know.”
Chelsea have been working hard to get the team younger over the last year or so. Anelka, Alex and Drogba have all left. It will be interesting to see what Chelsea do this year with Lampard, who has been one of Chelsea’s all-time best players.
Lampard has been used to starting every week, and he made it known during the AVB reign that he was not happy being on the bench. Will Lampard accept a reduced role at Chelsea this season? And if Chelsea offer him a new deal, I am sure it will be at reduced wages. Will he accept that?
If not, then Lampard sounds like a player who knows that he can spent a coupe of years in the sun of LA, making very good money playing in Major League Soccer. If he does come to MLS, do you think he will be a good signing by Major League Soccer or is he simply another aging superstar coming to America for one last paycheck?
