Kylian Mbappe has been one of the stars of the World cup, and as a Real Madrid fan growing up, he has been linked with a move to Spain to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
So it is interesting with that backdrop that his mother is now publicly expressing her concern at the treatment that Mbappe is receiving at Paris Saint-Germain, and in particular the way team-mates Dani Alves and Neymar routinely mock the teenager’s appearance.
Is she paving the way for Mbappe to force a summer move to Real Madrid?
According to El Pais, Mbappe’s mother Fayza Lamari has opened up on the testing environment her son is working in and how after a match last season, he engaged in a heated dressing room row with Neymar.
One of the biggest issues Lamari has with the behaviour of Neymar and Brazilian team-mate Alves concerns their jokes about the way her son looks.
The 19-year-old forward is often simply referred to as ‘Donatello’, a character from the television show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And back in November, he was given a Donatello mask in the PSG dressing room.
Despite initially being a joke, claims Mbappe does not like the nickname – but yet it continues to be used.
Mbappe is thriving at the World Cup and shone again as France booked their place in the final with a 1-0 victory over Belgium on Tuesday. If he returns to Paris a World cup and Golden Boy Winner, could he force PSG owners, Qatar Sports Investments to make a choice. The golden boy of French football or Neymar?
QSI thought they had signed a future Ballon d’Or winner last summer. And they might have. Except he is French not Brazilian.
The rise of Mbappe might give QSI the opportunity to sell Neymar this summer and save face, because they could present it as making Mbappe the new face of the club and not Neymar.
