The biggest story of the summer will be who United sign to replace Edwin van der Sar and it appears that United have narrowed their search down to two goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer of Schalke and Atletico Madrid’s David de Gea.
Neuer was reported to be the top of United’s list and United’s goalkeeping coach Eric Steele watched Neuer in action at the weekend.
But comments from Neuer this week seem to indicate that he wants to stay in Germany:
“I definitely want to win the Bundesliga once in my career,’ he said. ‘I can go abroad twice a year, once for a summer holiday and once for a winter holiday, but whether I need to go abroad to play football – some players say you do, but I see things differently.”
Bayern Munich are said to be interested now in signing Neuer, which means that United will have to turn their attention to David de Gea. Atletico Madrid told United that de Gea would cost around £18million for a player who is called the best young goalkeeper in Europe. That kind of transfer fee would smash the British record for a goalkeeper.
Personally I really like de Gea. He is young, but he could well be United’s number one for the next 15 years. And if that is the case, then even £18million seems like a reasonable price.
