Barcelona defender Gerard Pique confesses “in the nine years I’ve been here, it’s the first time I feel inferior to Real Madrid.”
Barca were outclassed by Madrid in both legs of the Supercopa, resulting in a 5-1 aggregate victory for Los Blancos, and Pique lamented how
“we’re not having our best time as a team or a club.”
“We thought they’d play with two forwards and not three, like they did in the first leg,” he said after the game.
“They pressed very high and were better than us at the beginning. After that, it set the tone [of the match].
“We’re not having our best time as a team or a club. We should be as close to each other as possible and paddle forward.
“We must live with this defeat and accept that Madrid are better than us. The season’s very long and there’s room for improvement.
“Still, in the nine years I’ve been here, it’s the first time I feel inferior to Madrid.
“It’s true that they’ve won the Champions League, but we came here and won not that long ago.”
These are difficult times at the Camp Nou. The 2-0 defeat at the Bernabéu, meant that for the first time in 24 games Barcelona didn’t score against Real Madrid. The last time this happened was when Jose Mourinho’s Madrid beat Barcelona 1-0 in the 2011 Copa del Rey final.
Barca’s style of play and philosophy is built around ball possession but on Wednesday night, it was Madrid which had the majority of the possession (51.5%) the first time that has happened in a Clasico since 2008.
Barcelona are on disarray. The Cules are disgusted with the board. Neymar has been sold are there are no signs of his replacement(s). And Lionel Messi has yet to put his signature on a new contract, meaning that he could walk away from the club for free next summer.
Barcelona are in pieces with just three days to go before the new season.
