It looks like Chelsea have some more shopping left to do this summer. Despite spending over £66m on Eden and Thorgan Hazard, Oscar and Marko Marin, the European Champions are not finished yet according to Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “We are still looking to strengthen in one or two areas.
Speaking after Chelsea’s 1-0 pre-season defeat to AC Milan in Miami, Gourlay said:
“While we ended with a very strong season, it was clear that there were some areas where we did have to strengthen, so we knew we were always going to have to do that.
“If the right players become available at the right time we will sign them. We’ve done that and we are still continuing to look at one or two positions and we will see how that develops over the next couple of weeks.”
By all accounts Chelsea are still looking for another right back and a striker. At right-back Chelsea have been linked with Inter Milan’s Maicon as well as Marseille starlet Cesar Azpilicueta. Either full back will cost under £10 million.
The big spending will be in finding a top striker to replace Didier Drogba with with Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao among the players Chelsea are looking at.
It is interesting that Manchester City have been quiet in the transfer market this summer as they say they are working on being eligible for Europe under Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules, while PSG and Chelsea have both spent like crazy.
If Chelsea add another quality striker and a new right back do you think that will be enough to close the gap with Man City and Man United?
