Deportivo La Coruña and holders Sevilla moved into the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey on a night when Josep Guardiola saw his Barcelona squeak through on away goals.
Having been frustrated by Athletic Bilbao in a goalless first leg two weeks ago, Barcelona once again found their opponents difficult to break down. It wasn’t until the 75th minute until Barcelona finally scored in the tie when Eric Abidal scored his first goal for Barca. Fernando Llorente equalized for Athletic in the 85th minute but they could not find the second goal they needed to advance.
Leading 5-3 against Málaga from the first leg, Sevilla were comfortable 3-0 winners in the second leg. Ndri Romaric was amongst the scorers for Sevilla. Malaga, who had Weligton sent off in the 72nd minute, gave debuts to new signings Martín Demichelis, Enzo Maresca, Ignacio Camacho and on-loan goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.
Adrián scored a hat-trick, his first effort a 90th-minute equaliser from the spot following the dismissal of Miguel Ángel Tena, as Deportivo defeated Córdoba 3-1 after extra time and 4-2 on aggregate. The remaining five ties take place on Thursday.
