Barcelona have officially announced the signing of Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez from English side Liverpool. The Catalan club’s website made the following statement:
“FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan will be travelling to Barcelona next week for a medical, to sign his five-year contract and to be officially presented to the media and fans as an FC Barcelona player”.
Luis Suárez is one of the most productive strikers in European football. Since turning professional (2005/06) he has always scored at least ten league goals a season, whether at Groningen, Ajax or Liverpool. The 27 year old is heading for the Camp Nou as holder of the Golden Boot after hitting 31 goals for Liverpool last term, which means he has topped the scoring charts in both Holland and England.
The 17th Uruguayan to play for FC Barcelona is not just a prolific scorer, he also has a strong competitive spirit and a powerful figure, and he’s coming to Barça in search of even more. Luis Suárez thus adds his name to the impressive list of world class strikers that have played for the club in recent years, and is the fifth to have arrived with a Golden Boot among his honors.”
Left out of the Barcelona statement is the fact that Suarez is banned from all football related activities until late October, something you would expect them to acknowledge. But in reading through the multiple articles on the Barcelona website there is no mention of the suspension. Does Barcelona know something that we do not? Do have have some indication for the Court of Arbitration for Sport that they will overturn the four month ban?
Whenever Suarez walks out onto the pitch at the Camp Nou for the first time, his partnership with Lionel Messi and Neymar might be the best attacking trio in all of sports.
Ironically scoring goals was not Barca’s problem last year or the year before. Barcelona’s problem has been a aging defence and midfield, but instead of addressing those problems they have spent around €160 million euros over the last two summers signing Neymar last year and now Suarez, while letting Thiago, Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez go,
If they don’t address their defence and midfielder is will be another disappointing season at the Camp Nou.
