Atletico Madrid has signed Brazilian midfielder Elias Mendes to a a 4 1/2-year contract. Elias helped Corinthians to a third-place finish in the Brazilian league this season.
A statement on the Atletico Madrid web site said:
“Elias Mendes will arrive in Madrid on Monday December 20 for a medial under the supervision of Atletico Madrid’s medical staff. He will then sign a deal with the Rojiblancos for the remainder of the season, and the next four years. Once he passes his medical, the player will become an Atletico Madrid player officially and he will be unveiled (date to be announced).”
Elias told the Spanish sports daily AS that “I am ready to play, I am in good shape because I have just played the Brazilian league.” The 25-year-old player from Sao Paulo said that he “preferred to play in midfield behind the attack.”
Elias is known for his strength, physique and attacking qualities and could help fill the void left by Simao Sabrosa who is likely to be sold to Turkish club Besiktas, according to Atletico president Enrique Cerezo.
