Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone insists Adrian will not be leaving the club amid continued speculation linking Tottenham Hotspur with the striker.
Adrian joined Atletico from Deportivo La Coruna 12 months ago and he enjoyed an impressive debut season at the Vicente Calderon, scoring 18 goals and playing a key role in the club’s Europa League triumph.
Though Atletico president Enrique Cerezo stated earlier this week that there have been no enquiries for the 24-year-old, rumours of Spurs’ interest are not slowing down.
Simeone has now outlined his position on the future of Adrian and he is adamant that the forward will not be sold this summer.
“Adrian will not leave Atletico Madrid,” Simeone told a press conference. “That is clear.”
Adrian also met with reporters to say that he is unaware of any talks about a possible move away from Atletico, and is not looking to leave the Rojiblancos in any case.
“I’m very happy at Atletico and, as far as I know, the only negotiations that are open with the club are regarding my contract renewal. I don’t know anything more about any other offers,” he was quoted as telling Europa Press.
“I have a contract with Atleti and I’ve got three more years here. Now I only want to think about the national team and it isn’t the moment to talk about rumours and things that come out in the papers.”
Adrian is said to have a €18million (£14m) release clause in his contract. It will be interesting to see if Atletico and Adrian’s tune changes if Spurs come in with a bid that triggers the release cause.
