Arsenal are reportedly in talks with Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy after triggering his £20m release clause. Reportedly that clause is only available for clubs in the Champions League next season, which will end Liverpool’s interest in the striker.
It an interesting move by Arsene Wenger as the 29 year-old Vardy is considerably older than the typical Arsenal target. There have to be concerns that while he scored 24 times last season as Claudio Ranieri’s side shocked the world and captured the title, was that a career year for Vardy or can he replicate that goal scoring form over the next couple of seasons?
Plus, Vardy thrives in a counter-attack offense like Ranieri used at Leicester, where he can use his speed to attack the space behind defenders. That is not the Arsenal style of play. Wenger prefers more of a possession-based game and it is unclear whether Vardy can thrive in that type of system. vardy is actually a much better fit for Jurgen Klopp’s style of football at Liverpool, but they cannot trigger Vardy’s clause as they are not in the Champions League next season.
It will be a big decision for the Leicester striker. While Leicester just rewarded his performance with a pay raise to £60,000-a-week, he could easily double his money with a move to the Emirates. Over four years, that could be worth more than £10 million to the striker.
England boss Roy Hodgson has made it clear he does not want players underdoing medicals or being involved in transfer talks after they have departed to France for the Euros, so this deal could be wrapped up very quickly.
What do you think of Vardy? Do you think he would be a good signing for Arsenal?
