According to Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft, Arsenal have been given the green light to make Julian Draxler their marquee summer signing. The only caveat is that they offer Wolfsburg a club-record €60m (£51.1m). That would beat the £42.5m Arsenal paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil in 2013.
The silky attacking midfielder was heavily linked with the Gunners during the January 2015 transfer window and has once again emerged as a shock target in the past week.
Fjortoft has taken to Twitter to address the story, claiming that a £51.1m bid from Arsenal will be enough to convince the Volkswagen-backed outfit to sell:
He tweeted: “Arsenal offer 50 mill euro for Draxler”
“Bild and English papers quoting each other….
“Wolfsburg say NO. Apparently 60 mill YES.”
Draxler, who starred for his nation at the EUROs is a versatile attacking midfielder, who is also able to play as a ‘false nine’.
Draxler is a really good player but I don’t see how he fits into the Arsenal line-up. Assuming that Arsene Wenger keeps with his usual 4-2-3-1 formation next season, at the moment the attacking “four” in that formation are Giroud, Sanchez, Ozil and Ramsey. Who would Draxler replace?
Sanchez can play as the lone striker instead of Giroud, which would free up a spot for Draxler, but I don’t see that as Sanchez’s best position.
What do you think Arsenal fans? Would Julian Draxler be a good signing? If so, where would you play him?
