I have to hope that Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez was misquoted when he said that he has reached a level where he can compete with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sanchez’s former Barcelona team-mate Messi and his Real Madrid rival Ronaldo are the best players in world football, and collectively have won the Ballon d’Or award for the last eight years.
But that did not stop the Chile forward talking up his own talents to Sport saying:
“I have reached a level where I can compete with great players.”
“I do not feel inferior to anybody. I liken [my qualities] to Messi and Ronaldo. I have the same abilities as them.”
Sanchez has been a brilliant signing for Arsenal scoring 38 goals in his first two season’s in England. He became an instant fan favourite after his debut season in North London, in which he scored 25 times in all competitions.
But after a dip in form at the tail end of last season, Sanchez only managed to score 13 Premier League goals, one of the reasons why Arsenal were unable to close to gap to eventual champions Leicester City.
So lets not get carried away here. The reason why Sanchez left the Camp Nou for the Emirates in the first place is because the form of Messi, as well as the arrivals of Luis Suarez and Neymar, meant that he could not get a game.
For Sanchez to be considered one of the best players in the world, he needs to dominate games like Messi and Ronaldo do, something we did not see very much of last season.
What do you think of Alexis comments?
