Clear signs that the Rafa Benitez era at Chelsea will be a very short one as the Daily Express is reporting that Chelsea are set to make Pep Guardiola the highest paid manager in the world.
Guardiola turn down three offers from Abramovich last summer after leaving the Nou Camp for a year’s sabbatical and it looks like Chelsea are going to make him an offer he cannot refuse.
Reports are that Chelsea are preparing a contract offer for the for Barcelona boss worth an eye watering £18m (€21.9m) a season for three years. That works out to an amazing £54m (€65.7m) over the length of the contract.
That wage would make Guardiola not only the highest paid manager in the game, but one of the highest paid people (including players) in football.
A source close to Abramovich told the Daily Express:
“Roman still wants Pep. He is the No 1 choice and Chelsea will make him another big offer.
“Benitez will stay until the end of the season. His task is to finish in the top four and also to win a trophy.”
The Chelsea offer will set the new standard for what top managers get paid. Currently the highest paid manager in British football is Sir Alex Ferguson at £7.6m a year. If Guardiola comes to Chelsea, then I would expect that Fergie will be knocking on the door of United’s Chief Executive David Gill asking for a raise!
Do you think that Guardiola will accept Chelsea’s offer, or is he heading to Manchester?
