This was not a good weekend for Michel Platini and Uefa’s Financial Fair Play as both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain wrapped up their domestic titles.
City and PSG are the poster child’s for why Platini wants FFP, but what does he say to those teams fans as City wrapped up their second title in three years while Paris set a new Ligue 1 record of 86 points in a single season. Is Uefa really going to tell the Premier League or Ligue 1 champions that they cannot play in the Champions League? Of course not.
City kept their cool on Sunday as they beat West Ham United 2-0 on the final day of the season to finish two points ahead of Liverpool, 2-1 winners against Newcastle United. But the image of thus season will be Steven Gerrard slipping against Chelsea and gifting Demba Ba a goal against Chelsea. Liverpool never recovered from that mistake and you have to wonder if Gerrard will ever get a better chance to win a title than he had this season?
There is one title race in Europe that will go down to the final week and that is in Spain where Atlético and Barcelona will face off on the final day of the season to decide the champion. The pressure has gotten to Atletico in the last couple of weeks, as they have dropped points and points, and Barcelona, who everyone thought was out of the title race a couple of weeks ago, amazingly still has a chance to win the title.
